Life From Mars

I believed this to be true from the beginning.

Ancient Martians were carried to Earth

Scientists have discovered compelling new evidence that life has existed on Mars and was brought to Earth in an ancient meteorite.

State-of-the-art instruments and techniques reveal that tiny fossils in the rock found in Antarctica are microscopic aliens and not produced by other effects.

The meteorite found in the Antarctic's deep freeze is called Allan Hills 84001. It hit the headlines 13 years ago in 1996 because of the peculiar fossils it appeared to contain.

NASA suggested then that it was ancient martian microbial life and President Clinton even went on TV to speak to the nation about the historic moment. However, the majority of scientists were unconvinced.

The meteorite, blasted out of the martian surface 16 million years ago, crashed to earth about 13,000 years ago and lay undetected in the icy desert.

Now a new report by NASA scientists at their Johnson Space Centre in Houston says there is powerful new chemical and fossil evidence that the meteorite does indeed contains microscopic martian fossils.

The new research uses more advanced high resolution electron microscopy than was possible 13 years ago. The scientists have examined carbonate discs and tiny magnetite crystals inside the space rock.

The report by the NASA team, led by Kathie Thomas-Keprta, claims that the carbonate disks that are evidence of interaction with water on Mars more than 3.5 billion years ago.

The scientists believe this means the rock formed at a time called the Noachian epoch when vast oceans may have covered Mars and the planet was much more like Earth than the dusty desert it is today. Other scientists have suggested that life could have survived at a time when Mars was warmer.

The NASA team's report says that magnetite fossils "with unusual chemical and physical properties" in the meteorite are "intimately associated within and throughout these carbonate disks".

They believe this is clear evidence that the fossils are microbes from Mars and not bugs from Earth that contaminated the rock in the last few thousand years.

The new findings appear in a 46-page scientific paper being published this month in the respected journal of the Geochemical and Meteoritic Society

Spaceflight Now says the new research centres on so-called magnetic bacteria that on Earth, and apparently Mars as well, leave distinctively-shaped remnants in the rock. Chemical tests also show they are likely to be a biological feature rather than geological.

UK Mars expert Professor Colin Pillinger, of the Open University, told Skymania News: "This is valid, good quality work and more compelling evidence to add to the mix."

"it has been too easy for others to claim they were due to something else. But these guys have been plugging away at this for years and years. It is a very careful study by some very reputable people.

"If you want to prove that there is life on Mars you have to have extraordinary proof. That's why we wanted to go there with Beagle."

Impact expert Dr Emily Baldwin, Deputy Editor of Astronomy Now magazine, told us: "Many scientists argued that what looked like fossils in the meteorite were really caused by the explosive event, such as an asteroid impact, that blasted the rock out of Mars in the first place.

"But the NASA team is now saying they have proved that they could not have been produced by the blast itself.

"If indeed the features turn out to have an extraterrestrial biological origin, and were not formed during the 13,000 years that the meteorite spent lying on the surface of the Earth, then this will have profound implications for our understanding of how life evolved in the Solar System."

Dreams vs. Reality and UFO's

After posting a comment to Mike Clelland's blog, Hidden Experience - a story he wrote about a dream experience he had - he suggested I write more about the strange dream adventure I was alluding to.

Some years ago I had one of those very realistic dreams that happen every so often. I am sure we all get them from time to time. Mine are often related to UFO's.  In this case I found myself standing in a modern office building, peering through the window across Halifax Harbour at night. From my point-of-view I could easily discern two bright lens shaped objects which could only be described as UFO's, as they glided around at low level. I remember having that familiar uneasy feeling that I was being watched by the objects. Almost like the were there just for my own benefit. The dream was crystal clear and in full colour. Then, suddenly, the dream ended. It was easy for me to to remember because it had such an effect on my emotions - a combination of fear, dread, and fascination.

It was also strange to me because I couldn't for the life of me figure out which building I was standing in during the dream. Then about a year ago I started teaching film studies at the Centre for Arts and Technology here in Halifax. A couple of weeks ago I found myself standing in the cafeteria as the sun was setting. I realised with a start that this was the very spot that I stood in the dream. The view was the same, save for the UFO's. My only thought was, "Now What?" It seems pretty silly for me to think that I will see UFO's from this location anytime soon, but I can't help wonder about the significance of the dream. I suppose only time will tell.

A Disastrous Democracy

Weird Asian News is almost always a great source of paranormal and supernatural happenings. This one's pretty cute. Could there be something to the notion of a person plagued with bad luck? If so, a President could certainly weild a large amount of grief on his constituency. Like in Indonesia for instance.

Locals Afraid Indonesian President is a Jinx

Unlike his peers who fend off corruption charges and sex scandals, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the Indonesian president has been accused of being a jinx. The 60 year old leader has been blamed for a number of natural disasters that have plagued Indonesia in recent years.

Folks believed that the president, whose birthday fell on 9th September 1949, had double nines ruling events of his life and those around him.

And since local superstitions marked the number 9 as an unlucky number, folks have linked almost all disasters during his term to his inauspicious birth chart rulings.

Thus, disasters associated with his unlucky charm include the most recent earthquake as well as the tsunami of 2004.

The concept of the president being a jinx is so prevalent amongst certain factions of Indonesian society that locals have started calling him “Selalu Bencana Ya” which translates as “Always A Disaster”.

This idea of associating Yudhoyono to bad luck is also quite popular amongst the opposition party.

In fact, Permadi, a member of the opposition party who was a shaman in his spare time, has been quite vocal about this link.

“Just look at the numbers of his birth date – the ninth of the ninth, ‘49 – that’s unlucky. The more he holds on to power, the more great disasters will happen,” he said.

On the other hand, Yudhoyono himself doesn’t seem to cater to such beliefs.

“Magma doesn’t move because SBY has become president. It’s malicious to link it to me being president,” was his response to one such jinxing claim.

Mac Tonnies Dead at 34

Mac Tonnies, noted blogger and writer on UFO and Paranormal topics was found dead in his apartment on Thursday October 22. It is a sad day for all of us who knew him or followed his work. I had the pleasure of spending several months last summer filming with Mac in Wyoming, Arizona, and California, during the making of Supernatural Investigator. He hosted the show on life from other planets. Mac was one of a kind. A brilliant thinker, gifted photographer, a lover of espresso, and, as I would often joke with him, a lover of female mannequins (Only through gazing and photographing them through store windows.) I followed his blogs regularly and only just spoke with him last week. His death comes as a great shock for me, and those who appreciated Mac's love of life, art, science, and paranormal. He will be greatly missed - never to be replaced on this earth.

God speed Mac,

Mike MacDonald

Local Deity Freelances as Security Guard

This is a great story. And another example of a misogynist God like figure. But it seems to work for the locals.

Shri Shanidev: The Doorless Village

Shani Shingnapur is a small village in Maharashtra, India that has been depending on their deity for crime prevention measures and thus, has so far avoided using doors, windows or even locks.

Such is their faith in Shri Shanidev (Hindu God of Saturn), that they unofficially ban people from having normal safety mechanisms like latches, windows and doors.

22sani Shri Shanidev: The Doorless Village picture

The people of the town claim that ever since the deity’s idol was set up in the village around 150 years ago, no one has experienced theft or any such grievances.

However, there is some discrepancy about the exact nature and number of crime instances.

Many point out that there has not been a theft in their time, while others note that thieves are always attempting to rob them but that their deity always sends the items back to them.

On the other hand, the village chief from 2004 was forthcoming about crime deterrence factors in Shani Shinhnapur.

According to her, “There have been no robberies in the village. When someone has tried they have gone blind and unless they confessed they were unable to leave the village.”

She did however end the account with this statement: “We keep our money in banks that have been built outside the village”.

As for the idol in question, it is a tall black rock that stands at approximately 5 feet.

Locals state that, years ago, villagers found this rock amongst the debris brought by a bad flood. They were mystified by its texture and overall look and were even more surprised to find that the rock bled after being poked and probed with sticks.

Initial fear of the black stone gave way to wonder when people started having dreams that linked it to Lord Shani. Soon they received instructions through their dreams to construct an open-roof shrine for this earthly representation of their deity.

The roofless feature was followed by the doorless village concept, both of which emphasized the close bond between Lord Shani and his people.

Their rituals also followed this basic idea where pilgrims and patrons did not require the help of a priest for darshans (prayers).

However, there are some limits in this special relationship. The deity has placed a restraining order of sorts against women and thus, they can only worship him from afar.

Nonetheless, the shrine and the quirky details of its surrounds are accepted by men and women alike.

In fact, this religious structure is one of the most popular temples in the country
